BISAC LIT LITERARY CRITICISM
The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a male monastery inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; for more than six centuries, it has shaped the layout and skyline of Sergiev Posad. The article presents the results of a study analyzing the architectural ensemble of the Lavra as the city-forming core of Sergiev Posad. The purpose of the study is to reveal the spatial organization of the architectural ensemble of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and the mechanisms that preserve the dominant role of the monastery’s architecture in the modern urban structure. The materials used include the information from the Lavra chronicle published on the official website of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, as well as the Land Use and Development Rules of the city of Sergiev Posad and the Local Norms of Urban Planning Design of the Sergiev Posad Urban District. It has been established that the key construction stages (14th–18th centuries) followed a single compositional logic, in which the Trinity Cathedral acts as the central semantic and visual element, and the bell tower serves as the vertical dominant. It has been revealed that the planning structure of the city is historically oriented towards the Lavra: the main streets converge on the monastery, and the main squares and transport hubs are located in its immediate vicinity. It is demonstrated that modern urban planning legislation reinforces the special role of the monastery through the designation of a tourist-pilgrimage zone and height restrictions that ensure the preservation of the bell tower as the main vertical landmark. It is concluded that the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius represents holistic architectural system and at the same time a living city-forming center, whose interconnection with the city is maintained at the planning, visual, and legal levels. This confirms that the Lavra retains its importance not only as an architectural monument but also as an active urban planning and city-forming core.
