Various approaches are used in modern art criticism discourse, including formal, historical, stylistic, semiotic, etc. In this article, the approach proposed by V.I. Zhukovsky is applied to the modern painting work "Thumbelina of the 21st century" (2023) by A. Kuznetsova-Ruf. This technique is based on the theories put forward by G. Velflin (formal-stylistic approach) and Ch. Pierce (sign theory). The use of this method on the modern painting material makes it possible to actualize the chosen approach, as well as to fully reveal the ideological aspects of the work. The analysis of the selected work helps to identify a thematic images number contained in the picture and identify the main lines of their interaction. One of the main semantic components of the work indicates the isolation modern man in the space of a figure and his disconnection from physical reality. However, the choice of a life path remains for a person, provided that he returns to the real world.
