Mandrake as an ethnobotanical concept: scientific study by A. Daphne and co-authors
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
This work presents a critical analysis of the article by A. Dafni et al. "In search of traces of the mandrake myth: the historical, and ethnobotanical roots of its vernacular names" (2021) , dedicated to the ethnobotanical and linguistic study of the vernacular names of mandrake (Mandragora spp.) in 41 languages. Based on a detailed examination of the eight parts of the article (introduction, methods, results, hypothesis testing, and conclusions), the authors' methodology for studying ethnobotanical concepts is reconstructed. Special attention is paid to approaches for verifying field and historical data, identifying "pitfalls" (misidentification, literary borrowings, botanical confusion), and classifying names into semantic categories (morphology, pharmacology, magic, rituals, mythology). By synthesizing the obtained data, a universal model for the formation of an ethnobotanical concept is constructed, encompassing six levels: the natural substrate, primary conceptualization, cultural and mythological processing, linguistic fixation, social stratification, and the final cultural image. The model demonstrates how a plant transforms into a multidimensional symbol embedded in language and allows the use of vernacular names as a tool for reconstructing cultural history, the migration of ideas, and the worldviews of various ethnic groups.

Keywords:
ethnobotany; ethnobotanical concept; vernacular plant names; mandrake; linguistic analysis; mythology; magic; rituals; doctrine of signatures; cultural migration; research model; interdisciplinary approach
