A review of the article "Traditional use of medicinal plants in the boreal forest of Cana-da: review and perspectives" by Y. Uprety, H. Asselin, A. Dhakal, and N. Julien, published in the Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine in 2012, is presented. The reviewed paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the traditional use of medicinal plants by Indigenous peoples of the Canadian boreal forest. The authors synthesized data from 49 ethnobotanical sources, documenting 546 medicinal plant taxa used to treat 28 categories of diseases and dis-orders. The highest number of species is used for gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal disorders. The study reveals uneven research coverage across different regions: the knowledge of peoples in the western boreal forest is significantly less documented compared to eastern territories. Special attention is given to medicinal plant conservation, threats related to industrial development and habitat loss, as well as issues of Indigenous intellectual property protection. International legal frameworks (Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) and Canadian national policies on traditional medicine and forest certification are examined. Based on the analysis, conclusions are drawn regarding the significance of this conceptual framework for Russian practice, including the potential application of Canadian experience in systematizing ethnobotanical knowledge of Russia's Indigenous peoples, developing legislative frameworks, and building partnerships with Indigenous communities.
