<abstract xml:lang="ru">

 <trans-abstract xml:lang="en">

The military operation started on February 28, 2026 by US and Israel against Iran is fraught with a full-scale war. Constitutionally, the Islamic Republic of Iran is a theocracy, headed by the Supreme Leader (the Rahbar), who is not strictly political, but religious person as well. The Shia state doctrine that had been evolved over the centuries since the beginning of Islam, was formulated in one of its specific variants as a nation-state ideology by the founder of the modern Iranian state Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini (1900-1989). Khomeini forged and field-tested his doctrine amidst the attritious war with Iraq (1980-1988), focusing on its military ideological aspects. The intrinsic part of this context is the traditional Shia messianic eschatology, reflected not only in policy statements of military and political leaders of the Islamic Republic, but also in the core of its Constitution. Up till the current situation, the ideas of Khomeini and relative Shia dogmas have represented a sustainable element in the Iranian politico-ideological context, although marginalized to a certain degree, particularly since the end of the presidency of Mahmud Ahmadinejad in 2013. Khomeini’s successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reluctant to use such type of discourse, being aware of the popularity of anti-government feelings in the Iranian society and growing antipathy towards the ideological excesses in the official rhetoric. However, the current crucial military and political changes, including the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself in a missile attack on his residency, the destruction of civil infrastructure and the resulting surge of patriotism, makes the comeback of the traditional Shia messianic eschatology to the foreground of the regional policy highly probable.
